Steve White is an artist and designer who embraces a sculptural approach in the realisation of his furniture and objects. An emphasis for the use of found material to make his work is essential. With the planet becoming increasingly more fragile, and exhausted of resources, the necessity to utilize and salvage what is already available becomes ever more important. Wood is mainly Steve’s medium of choice. It is prolifically abundant, and he will salvage it in numerous forms that it comes in, whether it be storm felled tree trunks, thrown out hardwood furniture, or offcuts of plywood from a skip. From this rich resource he will form a narrative through his work. He is intrigued by the idea of what is considered to be waste material, and is excited by the action of manipulating it into something else. Comment is then made on the ever shifting balance between humankind and its natural environment.
Over time Steve has exhibited in group collaborative shows, art and design fairs, shops, and currently his work is on sale at Bleu Furniture, a midcentury furniture shop in Herne Hill in South East London, owned by specialist dealer Moses Otunla.
Each piece of work is unique. His work is available to buy, and commissions are welcomed. Stephen can be contacted by email or by phone for enquiries.
Steve White studied at the Camberwell school of Art for foundation studies from 1992-93, then at Bath school of Art for a B.A. Honours Degree in Fine Art Sculpture from 1994-97.
