On: Cypress

Made as one of three of a series of sculptures for a commission funded by the NHS addressing the 5 ways to wellbeing, designated for the community gardens of Burgess Park in South East London. The subject of this piece is ‘Keep Learning’. The artist has chosen the ammonite shell to represent spirals of knowledge. Incorporated into the form of the shell in aluminium is the symbol for Standby, which is indicated on electronic items such as TV remote controls. This represents the switching on of learning. Emerging from the spiral form is a USB plug made also from aluminium, and white Carrara marble. This symbolizes knowledge through technology, and so by plugging into it, education can be gained. Tune in, turn on.
